Why the Increase Rate in Divorce Amongst Christians?

By Funom Makama

It has been estimated that 50% of every American marriages and 48% of all European marriages lead to divorce. After a survey done some years ago, divorce rates among conservative Christians were significantly higher than for other faith groups and much higher than Atheists and Agnostics experience. Why is this so? Are we Christians already forgetting our Christian values? What is God's reaction towards divorce?

Malachi 2:16 makes it so axiomatic about Gods feelings towards divorce. "For the Lord God of Israel says that He hates divorce, for it covers one's garment with violet. Therefore take heed to your spirit that you do not deal treacherously". God hates divorce so much, why then do Christians feel comfortable going into it? This is so appalling to the extent that even ministers of God go into divorce and even re-marry. This is not God's standard at all.

You may bring out a point from Jesus' statement in Matthew 5:31-32 which says "furthermore, it has been said "whoever divorces his wife, let him give her a certificate of divorce. But I say to you that whoever divorces his wife for any reason except sexual immorality causes her to commit adultery and whoever marries a woman who is divorced commits adultery" But remember also in Matthew 19:3-8 some Pharisees wanted to test Jesus. They came up to him and asked "Is it right for a man to divorce his wife for just any reason?" Jesus answered; don't you know that in the beginning, the creator made man and a woman? That's why a man leaves his father and mother and gets married. He becomes like one person with his wife. Then they are no longer two people, but one. And no one should separate a couple that God has joined together" The Pharisees asked Jesus, "why did Moses say that a Man could write out divorce papers and send his wife away?" Jesus replied, "You are so heartless! That's why Moses allowed you to divorce your wife. But from the beginning God did not intend it to be that way.

What can you say from his biblical conversation? God never intends divorce to exist, but due to our wickedness. This is the best way to explain this because it seems we have lost our sense of forgiveness. Have we forgotten the undeserved Love God showed us by sending His Son to die for us? Have we forgotten so soon that if not for God's forgiveness, we would have been doomed eternally? What if God decided to divorce us (Isaiah 50:1, Jeremiah 3:8), what would have become of us? And now, it is expected of us to share His love to one another and forgive each other. Even if your spouse commits adultery, shouldn't we forgive, especially if he/she shows some remorse? If you cannot show forgiveness to the one you have vowed to share your body with, how then can you shine the light to unbelievers to see the Love of God in you? This would be hypocrisy in the highest order.

Divorce is never a solution but rather in any negative circumstance; try to work things out to be stronger and better. Experiences strengthen relationships and if you are so weak to stand strong, try at least to remember, you once said "for better, for worse" as a vow.
