Yes, the Bible emphasizes on the fact that wives should be submissive while Husbands should be loving and we are quick to carry this part of that verse, but we easily neglect the part of the verse which states "In Christ". Her been submissive does not make her an object or property. Husband and wife are "equal" in Christ. The savior gave His blood for both of them. In His sight, they have equal rights as "one". Two oxen pulling together in a yoke may be unequal in their strength, yet they are "one". Not only does 1/2 + 1/2 = 1; 2/3 + 1/3 may also equal 1. There are areas where husband and wife are "equal" and there are areas where their God-given differences make them unequal, yet still "one". True wisdom will enable both husband and wife to recognize where he or she is the weaker and defer to the stronger- yet always, "in Christ". Besides, the Bible mathematics makes it 1 + 1 = 1. That is to say, God in His infinite wisdom is not interested in other areas of their differences or similarities and in fact for one to be a man and the other a woman, comparison will not be too appropriate, but so far as they are united in Christ. Both of them are each 1 uniting to form 1.
When the husband has a true, living faith in Christ, he will not be insecure or jealous if his wife is more clever than he is in some areas. It is childish to feel that one must be 'top dog' in order to be happy, with someone below him. Both husband and wife are free to develop their abilities to be what God intended them to be, and yet their marriage is not unhappy or in danger. Both truly respect each other.
However, this does not mean the perversion or distortion of this blood-bought freedom in Christ, as "women's lib" so often becomes. There is no place for pride and arrogance. Both husband and wife realize that their love is the gift of Christ who "loved the church, and gave Himself for it." The husband who is "in Christ" will not want to lord it over his wife as a tyrant; his love is in genuine humility, contrition, and respect for her. And the wife will not want to 'enslave' her role as "queen of the home" to push herself in the hard, unfeeling world of "dog-eat-dog" business or politics. She continues to be a woman, and finds her greatest joy in being herself, But she truly loves, and is loved. And she finds fulfillment.
Yes! Most women indulge in the "dog-eat-dog' business in which the man is also involved, but when you check deep into their homes or lives, they have already lived beyond the family as their primary responsibilities. Some of them have grand children and some even great grand children and that is why they have the time to indulge in such businesses depending on the magnitude of the grace of God in that respect. This is why women of 'political-integrity' spokeswomen and high profile ladies should be very careful on what they preach to younger women whenever they go public. It is very dangerous and disrespectful to do, when a woman stimulate younger women (who have their families as their primary responsibilities) to rise up "be independent" and be career driven. And hence dividing the quality time they suppose to give to their families and most especially children. The Bible itself encourages an industrious woman, very productive young lady but not to the detriment of her family. She can as well take a simple job that will not carry her away from her family and as time goes on, and that responsibility shifts away she can pursue tougher and more challenging careers. So young mothers and wives, be careful!
