God has built into a woman a supreme love for the baby that grows within her. He has honored all human mothers in that the Virgin Mary was entrusted with being the mother of Christ our Saviour. What if she had an abortion? What hope would the world have had then?
No woman who believes in Jesus Christ would want to take upon herself such a responsibility. Many arguments are being made for and against abortion. Selfish irresponsible sex is the cause of practically most of these tragedies. If one believes that "God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son" in the gift of the Virgin Mary's baby in the stable in Bethlehem, He will have a serious concern for human life. especially for that which he/she has procreated. Should the unwed mother who has made a mistake keep the baby?
God forgives sin, but He does not spare us from suffering its present consequences. "Thou has made Me to serve with thy sins", the Lord says (Isaiah 43:24). That means, the Lord suffers together with us in the results of our wrong doing! do not think He has forsaken you, for He has promised to stay with you forever: "Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea I will uphold thee with the right hand of My righteousness" (Isaiah 41:10). The unwed mother who does not have a husband to help her care for the child has all the more reason to lean upon the Lord. If she asks Him, He will help her; and if she believes His promises, she will realize how close He is to her.
Often her parents or family may reproach her bitterly, abuse her, and even cast her out. Now is when she needs more than ever to understand the good news of the gospel of Jesus. Her heavenly father has not cast her out! Christ came into the world to save those who are lost (that means all of us!). Some of His promises are:
The father judges no man, but hath committed all judgment unto the son. Verily, I say unto you, He that hears My word, and believes on Him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life. I am the bread of Life: He that comes to Me shall never hunger: and He that believes on me shall never thirst. Him that comes to me I will in no wise cast out. (John 5:22-24; 6:35-37).
By faith, the unwed mother who comes to Christ can find new life and hope. Believing that He died for her and for her child as well. she will begin to read the Word of God and learn the truth about God's love. Forgiveness includes the miracle of a new heart: "The blood of Jesus Christ His son cleanses us from all sin (1John 1:7). Let her look upon God as the true provider for her child:
Fear not; for thou shalt be ashamed: neither be thou confounded; for thou shalt not be put to shame: for thou shalt forget the shame of thy youth, and shalt not remember the reproach of they widowhood [loneliness] any more. For thy Maker is thine husband; the Lord of hosts is His name; and thy redeemer the Holy One of Israel (Isaiah 54:4-5).
It is cruel for families to disown or abandon unwed daughters who have tragically become mothers, Such harshness will not stamp out illegitimate births, as some expect. It will only drive the mothers to the big cities and force many of them into prostitution. When a church discovers one of its congregation in this sad plight, the members and leaders should ask, "What would Jesus do with this unwed mother? Drive her away, or love and therefore save her?"
Well, we know what Jesus would do. He would say, "Neither do I condemn thee: go, and sin no more" (John 8:11). However, those would not be vain words as many suppose. Such a mistake would happen to a woman only once in her entire lifetime if Jesus ministered to her, for when He says, "sin no more", there is power in those words to deliver from sin forever. Churches and their Pastors need to be humble and realize their unchristlike attitudes. We all need to repent, and learn to work as Jesus would. We must no longer deny the power of His gospel.
