Before we begin with the subject matter, we can concentrate on a general view of sex if not controlled. Sex is like electricity, which is a tremendous force for good, driving machines, powering light to brighten earth's darkness, even operating hospitals for healing the sick.
But when electricity runs wild, it is a terrible power for evil. Lightning shatters trees and houses, and kills helpless people. Short circuits start fires that engulf million-dollar buildings. Millions of good people have been shattered by a wrong use of sex, their lives twisted or battered as if lightning had struck them or a short circuit had burnt out their very souls. On the outside they look all right; you might never guess that sexual mistakes have almost killed their happiness inside, except for the sad look in their eyes that discloses a truth they wish they could hide. Many beautiful houses that excite our envy are filled with a desolate coldness within, because they are not happy homes, even though the electric lights cast an attractive glow in the evening twilight. The real light is gone, sexual mistakes have poisoned the very springs of life in the home.
Masturbation: Is it Harmful?
Some physicians and psychiatrists argue that there is nothing harmful about masturbation. But common sense tells us that it is unnatural, and therefore not what God intended. For many years it was called "secret vice," and the word "secret" reveals that it is a practice one is ashamed of. There is a reason why so many feel guilty when they practice it: masturbation is also called "self-abuse," and since God loves us and wants us to be happy sexually, abusing ourselves in this way is contrary to His loving will.
The fact that one's sexual organs are capable of being stimulated or excited early in life does not mean it is normal or healthy. Although a child's biological development makes it possible for him to feel sexual stimulation, its exercise should await a time of maturity yet to come. Picking fruit when it is green sometimes means it will never be good to eat. Everything in the Bible about love and sex tells us that God created our sex Organs for the exercise of love within marriage and for purposes of reproduction, not for mere self-gratification. "The body is not to be used for sexual immorality, but to serve the Lord." "Don't you know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, who lives in you and who was given to you by God? You do not belong to yourselves but to God; He bought you for a price. SO use your bodies for God's glory" (1 Corinthians 6:13, 19, 20).
What was the price? The sacrifice of Christ on His Cross. Self love such as masturbation (self abuse, actually), becomes very difficult for anyone who begins to understand Christ's love for him or her. In the light, you consider your body as His property. Masturbation is using something God gave in a way which He does not intend. Some call it 'solo sex' which is not how God wants it to be enjoyed. Masturbation can become a compulsive habit, driving its victims in much the same way as alcoholism or drug addiction. Many want to stop but don't know how. Testimonials from those who were victims but found deliverance in the gospel of Jesus Christ include the following points on how to gain the victory:
. As the alcoholic does, confess to God your inability to control this habit, and ask for deliverance from Him.
. Accept by faith your deliverance in Christ, and accordingly exercise your freedom of choice by the right exercise of the will. As the victim of Cigarettes finds the way to stop by saying, "I choose not to smoke," so choose to refuse the temptation. "The grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men. It teaches us to say 'No' to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age" (Titus 2:11, 12). Be patient and endure in saying "No!" to temptation, and you can win the battle.
. An idle mind is the devil's workshop. Give your mind and your body something useful to do. Many times this temptation will disappear through one's busy schedules but with worthwhile activities. Do not let yourself be alone too much-help other people and in this way you will grow out of the self-pity and loneliness which makes this perversion attractive. Then you will see how that "grace of God" works to deliver us from not only this form of "self-abuse" but from all the selfish evils that are destructive of our true happiness.
Captives of this habit have cried out, "O wretched man [or woman] that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death?" And they have rejoiced to say, "I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord" (Romans 7:24, 25. You too can claim this promise: "To him that overcomes will I grant to sit with me in my Throne" (Revelation 3:21).
The embarrassing sexual developments of teenagers
The points before this particular one are all very practical in the life of teenagers in general. In their early teens (sometimes earlier) girls begin their monthly periods known as menstruation. They need a wise and understanding woman to explain this new development in their lives. They need to know that there is nothing evil about this, so that they feel no abnormal sense of shame. In most cases, mothers are able to explain. Boys too, begin to experience the onset of sexual power within themselves in their teenage years, They discover their sexual organ is highly sensitive to stimulation, and their testes begin to function. boys become aware of this by "wet dreams" or what are called 'night emissions.'
These things happen while the boy is asleep and sometimes he is worried about them. Are they sinful? Why has God created us in this way? David prayed, "You created every part of me. All you do is strange and wonderful" (Psalm 139:13-14). God invented and created our sexual powers. This early evidence of sexual capability is not a sign of sin, nor that the boy should begin sexual activity; it is evidence that his body is growing and developing. But he is not yet ready for sexual intercourse. He is to rule and control his body. The Bible teaches us to bring our body "under complete control" (1 Corinthians 9:27), that is, "avoid immorality. The man who is guilty of sexual immorality sins against his own body" (1 Corinthians 6:18).
Remember, however, that temptation is not sin. Giving into it is sin. This means your awakening sexual powers will be like voices inviting you to take part in sexual sin; you will have feelings that are like a strong tide in a rushing river. If you yield to the pressure from within and from without, you will be swept down the river. But if you have faith in Christ, you do not have to yield. As a man, He felt the full force of all the rushing tide that you feel; He was once a youth just like you, "tempted in all points like as we are, yet without" (Hebrews 4:15).
We must get these two things clear in our minds: they are separate. To feel the temptation from within or without is not of itself sin; the sin comes only when you say "yes". And you are the one to choose; you are the 'boss'. Satan can never force you to sin. He is forced to obey you when you choose, in the name of Christ, you say 'no'.
