Most Christians try to eradicate anything at all which will stop them from serving God or that will pollute their sanctification as people of God. This is very good; nevertheless, we should be very careful not to restrict ourselves too much. Remember that the more the restrictions, the more the tendency of breaking the rules and if you act against what you believe is wrong, to you it is a sin. So, what about secular music?
Yeah! What about it? Secular music is any song which does not directly talk about God or has lyrics which do not have religious meanings. The Christian way of Life is a practical one and it is very real. If you condemn secular music then you condemn anything secular in general. No more going to schools, ceremonies, engaging in politics, no more businesses etc. if this is absurd, so also in the case of secular music. Of course, as there are negative aspects of the secular world, so also, secular music. But as we do not condemn all secular activities and processes because of the few which are evil, so also we should not condemn all secular music. For example, the National Anthem of your beloved country is a secular song.
Should you not sing it? There are songs with great meaning and very inspiring lyrics, shouldn't you listen to them? Also, there are very romantic songs which can keep couples together and stimulate intimacy and if need be for married couples to listen to them for such a purpose, please! They are encouraged to do so. The basic problem is our perceptive of viewing things or issues. To some, anytime they just hear hip-hop, they consider it evil and try to condemn it. A lot of Christian music have been composed and sang by well known Christian Artist in hip-hop. So far as what classifies a good song is its lyrics and decency, you should feel very free to listen to any good song, be it Christian or secular.
Just because the Bible says the love of money is the root of all evil doesn't mean you should never use money again. If you make such a decision, be rest assured that more than 90% of the whole world would be very interested to knowing how you'd survive. Our choice of music should be such that it is not conflicting God's standards irrespective of whether it's secular or gospel. So far as a song is pleasing to you and meets your good needs at a particular time or even enriches your inner-being and of course not against God's standard, it is also pleasing to God.
